The Australian Charities and Not for Profits Commission have issued a final warning to 6,000 charities that face deregistration for failing to lodge their AIS for two consecutive years. If deregistered, these charities will lose their entitlement to tax concessions. Each of the charities at risk of deregistration have received a notice from the ACNC and have 28 days from the date of this notice to lodge their outstanding AIS.
The ACNC have recently deregistered 1380 charities for the same reason. The ACNC believe that many of these charities had ceased to operate but failed to notify the ACNC. If your charity has ceased to operate, you can notify the ACNC in writing and apply to deregister your organisation by filling in Form 5A which can be found here.
